# W-4 extra withholding calculator (2026)

Form W-4 step 4(c) lets you ask your employer to withhold an extra dollar amount each paycheck. Type that extra in the calculator. It reduces cash take-home now and is treated as additional federal withholding in the annual total — it is not an extra tax on top of the computed bracket tax for planning, it is more money sent to the IRS during the year.

People use extra withholding for a second job, a working spouse, or to avoid a bill in April. This page does not compute the “correct” extra. It shows what a chosen extra does to each check and to annual net.

The engine already computes a simplified annual federal tax, then adds your extra on top of that withholding sketch. If you set extra very high, take-home falls even when the annual liability would not justify it — that is the point of the control.

State withholding is unchanged by this federal extra field. Reviewed August 24, 2026.
